About the course

Use AI scribes with confidence, and stay responsible for the record.

Ambient AI tools can reduce the note writing burden in general practice, but the doctor remains professionally and legally responsible for every note that enters the patient record.

What the activity covers

  • What ambient AI documentation is
  • The doctor's medico legal obligations
  • Patient consent as a genuine precondition of use
  • A practical consultation workflow
  • Rural and remote considerations: connectivity, locums, telehealth and interpreters
  • A verification checklist before sign off
  • Data security and privacy
  • When the TGA's Software as a Medical Device framework applies

Learning objectives

On completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain what ambient AI documentation is and how it differs from manual note taking or dictation.
  2. Describe the doctor's ongoing professional and medico legal responsibility for the accuracy of the clinical record when an AI scribe is used.
  3. Apply best practice patient consent and communication when using ambient AI documentation in a consultation.
  4. Use a practical checklist to verify and finalise an AI generated note before it enters the patient record.
  5. Identify data security and privacy considerations for ambient AI documentation in Australian general practice.
  6. Recognise when the TGA's Software as a Medical Device framework applies to an ambient AI tool, and the questions to ask a vendor about its regulatory status.
Assessment

Three case scenarios and a knowledge check.

Each scenario includes written reflection questions applying it to your own practice (performance review, 20 minutes), followed by a seven question, scenario based knowledge check (performance review, 10 minutes) with an answer key on completion.

Case 1

A verification failure

An AI generated note contains an error. Work through how it should have been caught before sign off.

Case 2

A new diagnosis coding feature

A tool adds diagnosis coding. Consider what changes, including its TGA classification.

Case 3

A rural connectivity failure

Connectivity drops during a home visit. Plan how documentation continues safely.

Completion of all sections, the reflective activity and the knowledge check is required to claim the full 1.5 CPD hours.
